In the world of medicine, there are two different types of people who really have a firm understanding of the experiences which disease and ailments can bring: those who practice medicine, and those who are afflicted by those ailments or diseases. The toughest thing a person can do is learn how to experience things from both perspectives, transitioning from a doctor or nurse into a patient who is in need of medical care.

This is the motivation for author Dr. A.H. Yurvati’s 30 Degrees on Bypass. The book is a fast-paced look into the author’s life, from Allentown, PA as a child to the journey into his medical profession, through a life in the military to begin with, and eventually a medical diagnosis later in life that changed everything. Through all the ups-and-downs in life, the author learned to take the losses in life and turn them into motivation and empowerment for a stronger future.

This is a fast paced and insightful book, and the author does an incredible job of relaying events in a succinct yet relatable manner through his writing style. The book is the third book in the author’s bibliography, following his books Wet My Hands and This to Me, and the book builds upon the personal history the author lived through to bring him to the point of having left the medical profession behind and becoming a patient himself. The knowledge the author shares of patient safety was vital information and gave readers the confidence to become their own advocates in situations where their care may not get the treatment or help which is needed.

For any reader who enjoys non-fiction, especially books that are short-form memoirs, books about medical practices and healthcare, and even books on motivation, this is the perfect book to pick up. The author infuses humor and wit into his writing style, which connects readers to the material effortlessly. Yet it was the theme of overcoming challenges that became the most heartfelt cornerstone of the book, showcasing what can happen when someone overcomes things like a struggling education which turns into multiple doctorates, or acquiring a health diagnosis and several complications and yet still rising above it to live life to the fullest. The relatability of the author’s life, from struggling grades in high school to enlisting in the military, finding love, and even the love for the pets throughout our lives, made this a memorable book to get ahold of.
