Some of the greatest lessons life can teach the world is that no matter who a person is, or what their station in life may be, everyone and anyone can make an impact on the world. History is a great teacher of this, with so many pivotal important moments in time being brought about by the most unsuspecting of people. All it takes is one decision, one act, to alter the course of history forever, and the world (or at least a particular nation on Earth), becomes an altogether different beast.

That was certainly the case in 15th century Scotland, as author Euan Macpherson explores in the novel A Dagger for Catherine Douglas. The novel explores the titular protagonist Catherine Douglas, a lady-in-waiting for in the Scottish court who has been granted an arrangement for a prosperous marriage to a wealthy merchant as well. While in court, she meets and falls for a powerful mercenary but soon finds herself in the midst of a dangerous game as life in the Scottish court becomes embroiled with plots to assassinate King James I of Scotland, and everyone is a suspect, including the mercenary her heart belongs to. Catherine becomes involved in the plot, forced to protect the King and possibly forfeit her life in the process.

Filled with heart, rich history, and compelling character dynamics, this historical fiction romance was gripping right from the start. From tense sieges and drama as mercenaries witness the horrors of war firsthand from both sides to the learning curve which comes with life in the royal Scottish courts and so much more, this novel was brimming with intrigue and suspense in every chapter. The balance the author found in the political drama and machinations of those plotting behind the scenes with the romance and passion which brewed between the two protagonists was perfectly encapsulated in their fiery scenes and the deep connection that formed between them. The mystery of who could and could not be trusted really brought the human nature aspect of this historical fact, and the tension that developed as the novel reached its climax will keep readers invested until the very end.

Any reader who enjoys historical fiction novels, especially those that delve into the political backstabbing of life in any royal court, in particular Scottish history, and historical fiction romance will absolutely fall in love with this richly developed narrative. The twists and turns in the story keep a well-known historical event feeling fresh and alive on the page, and the broader but more important themes of power, betrayal, and survival the novel explores showcases the ways in which a person’s personal ambitions and drives in life can overshadow the needs of others or the dangers that can surround a person, until it is too late.
