People often say that all it takes to find love is a single moment. While spending so many years searching for that special someone, more often than not a chance encounter will be the start of a relationship which feels like destiny burning its way into that person’s life. From two hands reaching for the same drink in a coffee shop, to survivors coming together in the wake of a tragedy and finding love in the process, a single moment can be the catalyst that changes a person’s life forever.
It is that single moment that drives author Andy Mitchell’s Destiny. The story follows Will and Cora, who meet by chance one day as Will is searching for work in the nineteenth century. As the two get to know one another, their feelings grow as well, but before either can act on it, the past haunting Will returns with vengeance, and as he goes on a journey to prove his innocence, Cora finds herself targeted by nefarious parties and disappears on the way to support Will. Will must search for Cora and find her before it is too late.
Fast-paced and grounded, this narrative is a wonderful blend of Western action and romance. The story is very character driven, giving two protagonists that are very honest and lead with their hearts, while also delivering relatable side characters and complex antagonists readers can both sympathize with and loathe at the same time. The imagery the author uses in this novel is gritty and reflects the natural desert atmosphere of this era and setting with ease, bringing a sepia-toned filter to mind when that imagery enters the reader’s mind and capturing the tension that mounts with each new development.
For readers who enjoy action driven romances, especially Westerns which blend in action and romance seamlessly, this is the perfect novel to get into. The themes the book explores, from the impact Western expansion and the wars between the settlers and US government against the Native American people had on all parties involved, to the idea of destiny bringing people together and the power love can have on two people’s lives, make this a compelling story filled with action, suspense, and romance.
