It’s human nature to wonder what would happen if we could go back in time and change something that happened, like say, a tragic event, knowing all that we do now. There are pros and cons to either side, with one wondering if you did change the course of what was truly destined to happen, what ramifications would occur? But yet, if you could prevent a tragedy from happening, wouldn’t you do whatever you could to stop it? These are just some of the questions that come to mind when reading The Resurrection Encounter: A Science Fiction Parable for a Nuclear Age by author Tom Skore.
Skore’s book focuses on alien explorers who must stop on a newly chartered planet to restock their supplies, and once there, they meet a man that will change their lives forever: Jesus. One alien, in particular, named Kaseel is immediately drawn to Jesus, much like his human followers are. He sees that his message of love and peace are powerful and they resonate with him because it is similar to the messaging of his own people. But once Kaseel learned that Jesus was in imminent danger, it changed everything for him. He couldn’t comprehend how his messages of faith, love, and peace could be misconstrued in a way that was dangerous to others, yet it was happening due to the convoluted politics of Ancient Rome. So he came up with a plan with his fellow crew members to plant a locator on Jesus in hopes of protecting him from the impending crucifixion.
This science fiction take on arguably the most iconic Biblical figure was interesting and fresh. It also explored the way mankind seems hellbent on destroying itself with nuclear warfare and how the effects of this will play out now and in the future. All throughout reading this story, I was hooked and wanted to see how the aliens would continue to try to help Jesus because they believed in him and his messages. They went above and beyond to do so, and in the end, his legacy will leave an impact that is impossible to replicate or tarnish.
Seeing all of this from the point-of-view of the alien race Kaseel and his people were from was incredibly intriguing and entertaining while still delivering on the important messaging that the author was focused on from the start. Anyone who is a science fiction fan will thoroughly enjoy the writing of Tom Skore and the way he seamlessly interweaves biblical figures and stories into his own work.
