Author Joe Martin’s The Extraordinary Adventures of Eoj Nitram, offers readers a glimpse into the psyche of a man who has been broken but persists through trials, eventually finding purpose and faith beyond violence. The story begins during Eoj’s childhood, shared with six siblings in a small Brooklyn apartment. Surviving a brutal childhood, Eoj and his brother work to provide for their mother and siblings. Furious with the world, a fire to fight keeps him going. Eoj makes a name for himself in the boxing ring – both professionally and later underground. His success brings him glory and fortune as he faces contenders much larger than him from all over the world. In the boxing ring, Eoj builds a completely new life.
Martin’s fast-paced storytelling and cinematic action scenes mirror Eoj’s relentless spirit, making him somewhat of an unexpected hero. While Eoj came from a difficult life, he strives to prove himself. The author reveals in the introduction that Eoj’s violent reign eventually comes to an end when he is “broken by love.” Eoj’s character grows with every struggle, overcoming brutes and demons. Eoj never uses his parents’ behavior as an excuse for his own life. Instead, he perseveres even when he faces the largest of trials. While enjoying his success, he gives back to his community. Eoj builds resources for those who need them the most – people who grew up just like him in Brooklyn. His charity work encourages his manager to match his giving to the poor.
Joe Martin tells an enchanting version of the American Dream, painting a picture of success attainable by even the least likely of people. Eoj’s determination never diminishes. During his success, Eoj explains what keeps him fighting, “I have an insatiable need to vanquish any challenger in the worst way possible when they come after my way of life and happiness.” This line resonates, especially with those ready to give up.
Joe Martin’s book is an excellent choice for young men, as well as the parents of young adults. I drew inspiration for my own sons while reading this book. Martin’s heartfelt story highlights the power of perseverance during times of utter hopelessness. Martin’s faith prevails throughout the work, showing that even the least likely can be transformed by the Grace of God.
