It is the sad truth of human history that there has always been a struggle amongst human beings to find connection and understanding between those of different cultures, faiths, and ethnicities. The United States has become a clear example of that, with heartbreaking history showing the nation’s roots in slavery forced upon African American people, to the more modern struggles being faced by several communities, from police brutality to immigration enforcement and so much more.

Finding the best of humanity in the face of these shocking realities is what makes author Jeffrey Gale’s A Human Rights Odyssey: From Dreams Deferred to Reconciliation such a powerful story. The book follows Rabbi Isaac Levin, who in 2014 opened a synagogue that became known as an interfaith community where all are welcome. Yet after two powerful tragedies dominate the news, the social justice warrior within Isaac and the horrors that plague the world drive Issac to look at his past and the experiences which have shaped him into the person he is in the present day.

Breathtaking and compelling, the author has crafted a beautiful and poignant narrative on the ways in which people’s differences can bring them close together. The world-building is relatable and engaging, and the rich and dynamic character development will instantly hook readers who are able to resonate with the journey the protagonist and those around him go on together. The emotional depth of the story is what many readers will be able to resonate with the most, as the experiences these characters have are like those the readers themselves may have gone through.

For readers who enjoy literary fiction, especially those that utilize spirituality and religion into topics of social class, societal views and social norms all at the same time, this is a memorable read they won’t be able to put down. The way topics such as race, religion, and relationships are brought to life in the book and the way they are explored not only through history but through location as well make this story so compelling to behold. The need to address and confront prejudice is artfully depicted through these characters and made me both morally and emotionally driven by the events these characters experience.   With clarity, Gale illuminates the human cost of injustice, and the transformative power of perseverance. A compelling testament to the strength of the human spirit.  Jeffrey Gale reflects on how moments of despair can become opportunities for growth, leading to reconciliation not only with others, but within ourselves. A contemplative and inspiring read.
