There is something to be said of the value of children learning about the geographical landscapes surrounding them, and how it coincides with not only the past but the present as we know it today. In Virginia! Our Home by M.Ed M.Div Coleman Florence M. we get to explore the Commonwealth of Virginia and its five distinct geographic regions. It’s an educational children’s book targeting young readers with many vibrant and detailed illustrations to help them better understand the geographical landscapes of Virginia.
As someone who currently resides in Virginia, I found this book particularly interesting. I loved how detailed yet not overcomplicated the writing was for its target audience of young readers to help them learn on their level. I think the fact this children’s educational book was written by a 4th-grade teacher is shown throughout in the best way possible. They know how to communicate with children seamlessly to help better educate them on important subjects such as geography.
We also get to touch on the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia and how that relates to the land’s geographical landscapes. Quite frankly, this is the perfect book for elementary students to read to better understand the state’s regional characteristics and the diversity in its landscapes.
Whether we’re discussing the different surrounding states bordering Virginia or the specific five different regions within Virginia itself, the language is clear and concise making it easy for 4th graders everywhere to understand the content of this subject. I particularly enjoyed how detailed the illustration was for the five different regions as it clearly showcased the differences that are then detailed throughout the text.
It also discusses what each region has to offer which is incredibly important for better understanding of the land’s purposes. All in all, this is one book any teacher would be glad to add to their classroom and educational materials for their students. The illustrations of maps, diagrams, and charts are plentiful and will further aid in the process of learning about this incredible state.
