If there was ever a role more challenging yet more rewarding in any society, it is that of being a mother. No one other than a mother can truly ever understand the challenges, as well as the rewards, they must embrace once they become a parent. From the moment they carry a child themselves or embrace a child brought into the world, the struggles and hardships their child endures as they grow   come with life’s milestones – all which they and their child engage in. Even more challenging is taking on the task of being a mother as a single parent, making choices and taking on responsibilities solely on their shoulders.

Motherhood is the central theme driving author and poet Rosa M. Diaz in the book Episodes Intertwined: Collection of Poetry 3. Exploring the years 1991-1999, the collection highlights the issues which came onto the author’s plate throughout those years of being a single parent. Just when life seemed to become overwhelming, a light from the clouds made things crystal clear, and drives the author’s poetry throughout the collection.

The collection of poems the author featured in this book was both unique and heartfelt, each poem steeped with emotions. The imagery found in these poems, as in “Afloat” as the author describes the monsters’ mothers fight both in nightmares both waking and dreaming, allowed for a visceral and gut-wrenching yet profoundly moving connection between the reader and the poet, and the variety of style in the author’s poetry and length spoke of the almost narrative style of writing in these poems as well.

Between the love and passion for poetry this book houses, this collection is perfect for poetry readers, non-fiction and memoir style readers, and those who enjoy tales of motherhood and survival against all odds. The way each poem seemed to indicate a linear journey through the author’s life and embraced the idea of a mother’s love overpowering the negativity and toxicity of relationships which come a woman’s way is passionately written, and something which will speak to readers everywhere. Add to this the translation of the author’s Spanish poetry into English and readers from all walks of life will be able to engage with this collection with ease.  A must-read for every mother, daughter, and poet at heart.
