In Final Critique: A Kira Logan Mystery, Author J. C. Andrew introduces us to another atmospheric mystery as readers follow Kira Logan, an art teacher, who has taken up a summer art job at Plein Aire painting. Kira chooses this short-term job due to its serene location and to get the peace she inwardly longed for.
With a set of unique and eccentric students, Kira discovers that one student, Jason, was convicted years ago for drunken driving but his short jail term outraged many, harbors a silent grudge against him. Some of these people are in Kira’s painting class and within a short time, she notices emotional storms bubbling within the members. Slowly, things take a dark turn as threats become rife, a murder is committed and a wildfire is started. This leaves Kira with only one option; to find the killer and take control of the situation – even if it puts her life in danger.
The success of a mystery novel is primarily based on the author’s ability to provide several villains in the story making it difficult to determine who committed the crime. The author did just that in this intriguing mystery. I had a hard time guessing who was behind the heinous acts. Again, sentences like, “They had no intimations of what unexpected situations awaited,” are bound to stir up readers to the mysteries about to unfold in the book.
The twists and turns present in the text keep readers from getting too comfortable and end in a satisfying conclusion. Further, the mystery was cleverly designed and the backstories provided across the chapters on Kira’s students, makes it easier to understand their temperaments and personalities. I particularly liked the exquisite descriptions of the surroundings and the characters, and the presence of a fully realized heroine.
It will therefore suffice to say, Final Critique: A Kira Logan Mystery by J. C. Andrew is a bingeable yarn which will highly appeal to a wide audience of mystery fans.
