Hollywood Book Reviews

Life is not about the ups-and-downs which you experience, but rather how you deal with them. So it is for the main protagonist in this well-crafted narrative by James Safreno. As a sequel to the York family, In the Shadow of an Eagle, follows James, the great-grandson of Soaring Eagle as he begins his life in the military after having had a tumultuous childhood. Bullied by his pompous cousin, Allen, having poor grades at school, and weight issues, he joins the military as a last resort.

The training is rigorous and James almost gives up, but emerges among the top in a military drill during practice. This gets him enlisted in Psychological Operations (PSYOPS) which involved gathering information and turning it into propaganda. This begins James York’s career in the military, as the book details his experiences, struggles and victories, as he rises up the military ranks over the years. He wrestles with his doubts and fears while struggling to break away from his childhood experiences. This is his story of the transition from a boy to a man.

James Safreno has penned a dynamic piece full of clarity and fascinating detail as he examines the personal lives of military personnel and their role in keeping the world from slipping into lawlessness. Through the main character, the author immerses readers into a world full of action, real combat, real characters, and espionage. James York is portrayed to be a military man of incredible bravery and this is played out in one of his missions in Vietnam where he had a near-death experience.

Safreno writes with great ease and every chapter in this book is tightly woven and interesting to read. While the book is quite detailed, the author avoids writing in long, dull lines but rather in simple scrutiny. I especially liked the author’s brutal honesty across the chapters which created a remarkable perspective in depicting James York’s life journey of strife, survival, and resoluteness.

In the Shadow of an Eagle by James Safreno is an action-packed military thriller that gives a great perspective about what it takes to be a soldier. It is an incredible tome shared through a soldier’s heart, thoughts, fears, and feelings. I highly recommend this fascinating read to those who love adventures – and especially those with an interest in joining the military or are in the army.
