Make America Healthy Again is a smart and eye-opening book written by Charles Antinori, MD, FACS, a surgeon with over 50 years of experience. Don’t let the serious title scare you. This is a book chock-full with real-life stories, funny moments, and honest opinions about how healthcare in the U.S has progressed. In addition to speaking like a doctor, Antinori particularly sounds like someone who has experienced everything and wants to assist everyone – especially young people – understand how we might improve things.
In the first part of Make America Healthy Again, Dr. Antinori tells us how medicine has changed over time, from the days when doctors barely helped people, to today’s super high-tech hospitals. He shares how people think they have a “right” to health care but don’t realize how complicated the system really is. There are lots of problems, such as too many tests being ordered just to avoid lawsuits, or people using the emergency room for non-emergencies which according to the author, results in a lot of wastage in time, money, and energy. He also talks about how being a doctor has gotten harder; too much paperwork, too many rules, and less freedom to just help people.
The book also dives into his own journey through medical school and surgical training. He ably demonstrates how it’s no joke becoming a surgeon which takes years of studying, practicing, and long, sleepless nights. He makes an excellent point about how, although modern doctors are still intelligent and diligent, the system they operate in is becoming more and more stressful every day. He also notes how technology like electronic records was supposed to help but ends up burning out doctors. And all those privacy laws (HIPAA)? He candidly admits and demonstrates how they make matters worse rather than better.
Even though this book covers a lot of big topics, it doesn’t feel heavy. It’s full of personal stories from surgeries, hospital life, and even funny moments with patients. Dr. Antinori also suggests smart ways to fix health care, such as teaching kids about health early, changing how we use insurance, and getting rid of some of the pointless rules doctors have to follow. He believes we can do better if we just use more common sense.
The writing style in Make America Healthy Again is super easy to follow. Dr. Antinori writes the way people actually talk – no fancy words or confusing science jargon. His sentences are short and clear, and he tells stories like he’s talking to a friend. He uses humor, everyday examples, and even jokes to explain serious things. The themes in the book are big – like health, fairness, money, and how we treat each other – but he breaks them down so they make sense. You don’t need to be a doctor to get what he’s saying.
If you’re a young reader thinking about a career in medicine or just curious about how doctors really work, Make America Healthy Again by Charles Antinori, will open your eyes. Blending compelling patient stories and medical insight, this eye-opening memoir offers practical lessons for policymakers, professionals, and every citizen concerned about the future of American health. It’s honest, interesting, and easy to understand, even if you have no prior knowledge about health care. The book gives us the inside scoop in a way that’s both fun and real. His work is worth a read.
